Už aj Kolumbiu treba kontrolovať , darmo kvalitné kamene sú stále drahé.

Irradiated-Colombian-emerald

New York--American Gemological Laboratories (AGL) announced that it has recently identified a number of Colombian emeralds that have undergone irradiation treatment.

Although rumors about treated emeralds have been rife for a number of months, the lab says this was the first time it had received stones that have been identified as being irradiated--a procedure that was first shown to modify the color of natural and synthetic emeralds nears 20 years ago.

AGL said in a release that although the color of the emeralds was slightly unusual for a typical Colombian emerald, color alone cannot distinguish treated gems. Instead, detection is most effectively carried out using a spectrometer (an instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum), since the treatment may produce different types of defect centers that absorb in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.

“Interestingly, we also noted that these emeralds had been clarity-enhanced by introducing a polymer-type resin into fissures to reduce their visibility,” said Christopher P. Smith, president of AGL. “So these particular gemstones had the standard emerald enhancement of clarity, as well as an additional enhancement of irradiation.”

According to AGL, the amount of irradiated emerald in the marketplace is currently unknown. The lab is urging suppliers to be aware of the situation and encourages other laboratories to be on the lookout for this treatment.

New York--
An increasing number of lead-glass filled rubies are being sold without proper disclosure in U.S. department stores and at shops in the Caribbean, a practice that industry leaders warn could impact consumer confidence in the jewelry industry.
Lead-glass filled rubies are stones that have significant fissures filled with relatively large quantities of lead glass. Certain processes that take place during repair of these stones, such as the application of heat or acid, and even normal wear and tear, are likely to damage the stones.
Despite these issues, the American Gem Trade Association, along with other trade organizations, issued a consumer alert late Monday warning that there are more of these lead-glass filled rubies flooding the market and being sold as “natural rubies,” with no information on the special care required for the product.
This results in not only a loss of consumer confidence in regard to rubies but for all jewelry in general.
In addition, the organizations note that improper disclosure of lead-glass treated rubies--whether they are sold at prices comparable to conventional enhanced rubies of the same size and color or simply sold without information on care--opens the seller up to potential legal action.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that all sellers disclose at the point of sale, to both trade and consumers, any special care required to maintain the appearance of an industry product.

While the FTC does not specify exact wording for identification of lead-glass filled rubies, here are descriptions and classifications used by some of the leading grading labs and trade organizations.

AGTA: Glass-filled composite ruby--special care required; for more information consult the AGTA’s Gemstone Information Manual.

American Gemological Laboratories: composite ruby, with comments: “This stone represents a composite of natural corundum and glass, also known as hybrid ruby.” Additional comments include: the material is heavily treated ... vastly improving the apparent clarity and adding weight; with special care warnings.

Gemological Institute of America: For a vast majority of this material (LMHC Info Sheet 3, Levels 2 and 3) GIA will not issue ruby reports but will issue identification reports and the description, “A manufactured product” with comments: “A manufactured product consisting of glass and ruby,” and this product is known to be unstable … with special care comments.

Gemological Research Swisslab: synthetic glass/treated ruby (GRS – type “hybrid ruby”) with comments heat treated and filled with a colored foreign solid substance (including lead). Special care required when handling; also known as composite ruby.

The organizations also note that depending on the level of lead glass used in the ruby, it may be improper to use the term “ruby” by itself to describe the product.

Turistika sa oplatí! 😉
